Green Tea Effect Why Its Finding Its Way into your Supplements

The Importance Of Vitamin B12 Supplement
Vitamin B12 or colbamin is a very important substance in the human body. This vitamin is usually stored in the liver. A vitamin B12 deficiency can result in several health problems. ...
Green tea is actually the tea of choice in the Middle East and also China, Japan and Taiwan. While westerners prefer the heavier blends of black tea, it has found more and more aficionados in American teashops and specialty coffee houses. Of course, once the green tea effect became known amongst alternative health practitioners, it was only a short time before green tea ended up finding its way into your supplements.

When perusing the isles of your local health food store, you will most likely find a large number of green tea supplements. Their effects, as the manufacturers claim, are astounding and large in number:

Green tea is said prevent cancer altogether, or if you are already a cancer sufferer to be useful as a treatment for the disease.

Similarly, it is useful for the treatment of arthritis, osteoarthritis, and multiple sclerosis.

Some proponents claim also that green tea can prevent Alzheimer's disease, or stop the progression of the illness if it is already present.

Green tea is said to help sufferers overcome depression and anxiety attacks.

Weight loss claims include the statement that it increases your metabolism, thereby helping you to get rid of fats and carbohydrates faster.

It is said that some laboratory studies found that green tea prevents HIV from lowering the T cell count.

While these claims may or may not be true, the Food and Drug Administration is quick to warn that green tea itself is not a drug and therefore does not fall under the guidance and oversight of the administration. Yet since health claims were so plentiful, it has come out with several warnings to counteract some of the more ambitious manufacturers:

The Food and Drug Administration wants you to know that drinking green tea or taking green tea extract supplements has not been proven to reduce the risk of coronary disease.

Additionally, the claims made that it prevents or treats cancer are optimistic and not based on scientific study.

Yet while the administration is quick to shoot down the over the top claims of the more ambitious manufacturers and advertisers, independent studies are coming out which at lest in part verify some of the claims, although not all of them. Granted, some of them are working more by extrapolation than double blind placebo controlled studies, but their information is nonetheless interesting and may point toward a large number of benefits that may explain the green tea effect, and why it is finding its way into your supplements.

Thus far, it is theorized that green tea, if consumed in large quantities such as 1.5 liters per day, will lower the bad kind of cholesterol because it contains high levels of antioxidants. This in turn is thought to be useful to prevent the build up of arterial plaque, which of course is the culprit in coronary disease. So while it is true that there is no scientific study to back up the claim that green tea will prevent heart disease, there is some common sense understanding that would point in that direction. Similarly, while green tea will not cure your cancer, the large number of antioxidants found in it would support the idea that it will help to reduce free radicals in your system that may be cancer causing agents.

While you may wonder why it has to be green tea rather than your usual black tea, keep in mind that green tea is processed in an entirely different fashion than other teas. Usually teas are made from fermented leaves to add pungency to the mix. Green tea, however, is made from leaves, which are steamed at lower temperatures. When prepared properly, green tea is steeped in water that is just below the boiling point, whereas black teas are very frequently prepared using boiling water.

While it is true that there have been no adverse effects reported by drinkers of green tea, there are a few words of caution:

Green tea has been found to counteract the absorption of folic acid by the body. If you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant, you know how important heightened amounts of folic acid are to your developing fetus. For this reason it may be wise to stay away from green tea during the time of your pregnancy.
