Vitamin D is a fat soluble that is produced by plants, is consumed in the diet. Vitamin D can also be made in our body after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. Effects of Vitamin D deficiency


The main effect of the Vitamin D deficiency is the decreased level of calcium and phosphate levels in the blood. It is because Vitamin D is essential for absorption of these minerals. The level of parathyroid hormone that increases the calcium level in the body may also be increased as the body tries to compensate for the Vitamin D deficiency. The deficiency of Vitamin D may result in a bone disorder called rickets in children or Osteomalacia in adults. The reason of the Vitamin D deficiency is lack of Vitamin D in the Diet or by insufficient exposure to sunlight. A newborn child and pregnant women are at a high risk of developing Osteomalacia. This deficiency can also occur in older because their skin produces less Vitamin D when exposed to sun light. There are some several rare hereditary forms of rickets because the body cannot process Vitamin D normally in the body.

Symptoms and Treatment

In infants muscle spasms may be the first symptoms of the rickets. The muscle spasms are caused by the low levels of calcium. In older infants the spaces between the bones may be slow to close. They can also be slow to sit and craws because of weak bones. The bone growth may also be abnormal. The bones in the spine and legs can be unusually curved. In adults the bones throughout the body can be weakened. The affected areas are also painful to touch. Calcium supplement are given by mouth as a treatment of Vitamin D deficiency. Special formulation of Vitamin D is given to the people with chronic liver or kidney disorder.
